MALAZZE’
by Raffaele Giamminelli

malazzeAll dialect dictionaries ignored the noun “malazzè”.
It has nautical origin and, according to me, it is present only in Pozzuoli, even if new generations ignore etymology of it.

Until 1950, when you could still breath the air of ancient traditions, houses and ground floor rooms in nautical villages, not yet subjected to the radical use transformations, met precise life need, [...] in fact they were fishing tools warehouses, and a lot of houses that overlooked directly the Dock and the Port, had holes that allowed boats entry.

Those were “malazzè”: magazzino (warehouse), magazzeno, malazzè.
